City Eyes Car-Free Prospect Park

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

A car-free Prospect Park in Brooklyn? Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he'll ask his transportation commissioner to look into the idea, a perennial one proposed by the group, Transportation Alternatives. It wants the city to try closing the park to traffic for three months next summer. The mayor says he's concerned about pushing the park traffic onto neighboring streets.

BLOOMBERG: I think it would be great if we didn't have automobiles in parks, but sadly they put roads through them and the development in the surrounding areas assumed you could use those roads so it's not quite so simple to say let's close them.

REPORTER: Right now, cars are only allowed in Prospect Park during morning and afternoon rush hours.
