Drawings of a new Goethals Bridge show a wider span with two more lanes connecting northern New Jersey and Staten Island.
The Port Authority today released renderings of a proposed replacement for the 77-year-old span, which carries some 80,000 vehicles each day.
Motorists have long complained about the bridge's 10-foot-wide lanes and lack of shoulders.
The proposal would create six lanes, each 12 feet wide, plus bike lanes in each direction.
The Port Authority hopes to begin awarding contracts to rebuild the bridge in 2011 and complete it by 2015.
The agency has earmarked $1 billion for the project but does not have a final budget.
