Southern New Jersey May See Another Power Plant

Governor Jon Corzine unveiled a lengthy new energy plan for New Jersey that seeks to balance environmental and economic concerns. WNYC's Ilya Marritz has more.
REPORTER: The 15-year forecast calls for more investment in renewables, new gas pipelines to Long Island, and, controversially, giving consideration to a new nuclear plant.
Corzine's plan doesn't say where the new reactor should go, but speculation has focused on a site in southern Jersey where there are already three working reactors. Ralph Izzo is president and CEO of the PSEG utility, which operates two nearby plants.
IZZO: At some point in our future I do believe a new nuclear plant would be part of a climate change solution. It stands to reason for me, at least, if you have all the infrastructure in place for three nuclear plants, that would be a logical place for a fourth.
REPORTER: One more reactor would tie the area with Palo Verde in Arizona for the densest concentration of reactors in the country. For WNYC, I'm Ilya Marritz.
