A federal judge has upheld a new city health code provision that would require national chain restaurants to post calories on menus and menu boards. WNYC's Fred Mogul has more.
REPORTER: The New York State Restaurant Association challenged the regulation, saying it would be burdensome for food establishments and confusing for consumers. But in his ruling yesterday, Judge Richard Holwell said it's a reasonable approach to the city's goal of reducing obesity.
The rule would take effect on April 21 and apply to restaurants with more than 15 outlets nationwide. That includes fast-food places like McDonald's and such sit-down chains as Olive Garden and T.G.I. Friday's.
Some restaurants including Starbucks and Chipotle have already started to post calories on menus. The restaurant association has vowed to appeal the ruling. For WNYC, I'm Fred Mogul.
