The Brooklyn hospital implicated in the death of a 12-year-old middle-school student has cost the city more than any other hospital in malpractice suits. WNYC's Fred Mogul has more.
The mother of Omar Rivera has announced she is suing Kings County Hospital and the city of New York for sending her and Omar home last week with allergy medication instead of testing and treating him for the drug-resistant infection that killed him. In recent years, Kings County has been the most sued hospital in the city's public health system by a wide margin.
The Health and Hospitals Corporation has paid out about 60 million dollars for Kings County lawsuits over the last two years. That accounts for more than a third of what malpractice suits cost ALL of the city's 11 hospitals in the same period. A city spokesperson says malpractice claims are down overall. For WNYC, I'm Fred Mogul.
