New York Area Airports Have Worst Delays in Country

Thursday, October 04, 2007

Our area's 3 major airports have the worst delays in the country. That's according to a new report from the federal Transportation Department. More than 40% of incoming flights arrived late between January and August of this year. Weather, air traffic congestion and maintenance or crew problems are among the reasons being cited for the delays.

Out of the nation's 32 major airports, Newark has the worst record for on time arrivals, followed by LaGuardia, then JFK. For on time departures, JFK ranked last, while Newark was a close second. The Secretary of Transportation is leading a task force to come up with ways by the end of the year to reduce congestion in the air.

One of the ideas being bounced around is to charge airlines higher fees to land their planes during peak hours.
