A Cranky Fred Thompson Stumps in NYC

Republican Presidential candidate Fred Thompson testily ended a news conference in Manhattan today after a reporter asked him whether New York was a sanctuary city, in favor of supplying services to undocumented immigrants WNYC's Elaine Rivera has the story.

REPORTER: After appearing before a group of JP Morgan Chase executives, Thompson held a private strawberry-and brie fundraiser at a chic midtown restaurant. At a brief press conference afterwards, Thompson said he believes he's the true conservative.

Thompson said unlike Rudy Giuliani, he's always been opposed to abortion, gay rights, and allowing cities to provide services to undocumented immigrants.

THOMPSON: When I was passing the law to outlaw Sanctuay cities, he was going to court to try and preserve sanctuary cities.

REPORTER: But when Thompson was asked whether he thought New York was a sanctuary city, he rebuked his press officer, saying "I thought we were only taking two more questions." He then left abruptly. Thompson, once expected to be the frontrunner, has been slipping in the polls. For WNYC, I'm Elaine Rivera
