New York, NY –
City and state officials who represent the East Side say they have reached an agreement with a developer to build a new school and more affordable housing units.
REPORTER: Officials say that the East River Realty Corporation - which wants to develop the site where the former Con Edison Waterside plant was on 1st Avenue - will accommodate the demands from the community. Councilman Dan Garodnick says it's a victory for the community.
GARODNICK: Today, we're proud to announce that any buildings that will rise here will include space for a new school and will provide for hundreds of units for affordable housing.
REPORTER: The plan calls for a pre-K to 8th grade school for 650 students and a guarantee that 20% of the residential units will be for permanent affordable housing.
