The reorganization of the city's public schools saved only 60% of what the Bloomberg administration claimed, according to City Comptroller Bill Thompson. He cited the statistics in a speech at Fordham University yesterday that was critical of the mayor and the chancellor's management.

Thompson says his office's review found that city schools saved only $140 million between 2002 and 2004, compared to $250 million often quoted by Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein. A spokesperson for Klein says the city's Independent Budget Office confirmed the agency had cut at least $221 million in administrative spending, which was redirected into teaching and learning initiatives.
