Survey Reveals Split Between African Americans and Immigrants

African Americans are more likely than Hispanics and whites to feel negatively towards immigrants. That's according to a survey conducted by a local non-profit. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports.
The Community Service Society interviewed close to 2,000 New Yorkers over the phone and asked them questions such as do you agree or disagree that "new immigrants are keeping wages lower for American citizens."
According to their figures, 52 percent of Native born blacks agreed with that statement. More than half of them also agreed new immigrants are taking jobs away from American citizens --- a sentiment shared by roughly the same percentage of native born Hispanics.
On other subjects, there are similarities between immigrants and native born groups. The survey shows all support mandatory pre-K, programs for high school drop outs and the elimination of college tuition for poor families. For WNYC, I'm Cindy Rodriguez.
