City officials are still trying to pinpoint the source of that gas-like odor that blanketed parts of Manhattan and Hudson and Bergen counties yesterday morning…and they're eying New Jersey.

A spokesman for the city's Department of Environmental Protection says the agency is pretty sure the source of the smell was along New Jersey's industrialized waterfront, just across the Hudson River from New York. Charles Sturcken says the dispersion of the smell and the prevailing winds at the time indicate it came from somewhere near Secaucus.

The strong odor led to some precautionary evacuations and about a dozen people were taken to hospitals complaining of difficulty breathing. There is no indication that the air was unsafe.
