New Wireless System Tested at Ground Zero

Fire trucks and firefighters swarmed 7 World Trade Center yesterday, but it was only a drill. Fire, technology and Port Authority officials tested a new wireless system.
REPORTER: Steven Harte, the city's associate director of communications, says the new technology will allow officials in Brooklyn to see what's happening at a fire anywhere in the city.
HARTE: The Fire Operations Center will not only be able to see where the various responders from an ambulance, they'll see the firetrucks, they'll be able to send the video back.
REPORTER: Last year, city officials announced the contract to build and maintain the multimillion-dollar high-speed wireless data network for police, fire and other city workers. Some 100 firefighters participated in yesterday's simulated fire in downtown Manhattan. The exercise included 20 mock injuries and a rescue from an elevator shaft. Later today, fire department officials will discuss how the testing went.
