Betram Powers Labor Legacy

Tuesday, December 26, 2006

Bertram Powers, who led one of the nation's longest and most crippling newspaper strikes, has died. He was 84. Powers was known as a tough negotiator when he served as president of Local six of the International Typographical Union from 1961 until his retirement in 1990.

He lived in Manhattan for 30 years but died in Washington, DC, where he moved nine weeks ago to be closer to his family as his health deteriorated. Bertram Powers' son Brian is on the line now from Washington, where he works as a labor lawyer.
