9/11 Families Sue City Over Fresh Kills

Monday, October 17, 2005

Families of September 11th victims are suing the city to remove a half-million tons of ash from the Fresh Kills landfill.

REPORTER: They say the ash contains remains of their loved ones who died in the World Trade Center attacks. Mayor Bloomberg said he sympathizes with their loss, but that the city has already done everything it can.

BLOOMBERG: Steps were taken to sift every single amount of material that was brought over there to make sure there were no remains that would stay there, and everything that was found was taken to the chief medical examiner's office.

REPORTER: Bloomberg said efforts should concentrate on building a memorial to the victims of the attacks. No identifying remains were located for about 1200 of the 2700 people who died.
