Sunday Drivers May Get Parking Break

Thursday, October 06, 2005

The City Council on Tuesday is expected to override Mayor Bloomberg's veto of a bill that would make it legal to ignore parking meters on Sundays.

If the override succeeds, the law could be in place by mid-November and would end the so-called pay-to-pray system.

Bloomberg had argued that eliminating Sunday parking meters would cost the city $14 million dollars in revenue and summonses and hurt merchants who rely on turnover of shoppers. The council sought the change after church leaders complained that their Sunday services were often disrupted when congregants went out to feed parking meters.

At least 46 of the council's 51 members are expected to support the override.
