Ferrer Beats Bloomberg Among Blacks, Latinos

Democrat Fernando Ferrer may have lost the race for City Hall but he did beat Mayor Bloomberg among blacks and latino voters. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports.
REPORTER: A Pace poll co-sponsored by WNYC shows Ferrer won the latino vote by a 29 point margin. He also won 53 percent of the black vote, compared to Bloomberg's 46 percent. Though Bloomberg fell short among blacks, he about doubled his numbers since he ran in 2001.
Reverend Al Sharpton said voters in predominantly black neighborhoods like Harlem and Bedstuy, Brooklyn did not buy the hype.
SHARPTON: He certainly doesn't have a mandate from blacks and latinos in this city and clearly he could if he would operate differently. But I think we need a little more than commercials and celebrity when we are dealing with real life in this city.
REPORTER: While many Democrats were quick to blame yesterday's loss on Bloomberg's campaign war chest, Sharpton said the Democratic party is disconnected from its base and has no clear message. For WNYC, I'm Cindy Rodriguez.
