Second Development Plan for Atlantic Yards

Friday, July 08, 2005

Now that two development plans are on the table for the MTA's Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn, community groups and politicians on both sides see an opportunity for some healthy competition.

REPORTER: Brooklyn Congressman Anthony Weiner - who is running for Mayor - says the smaller complex proposed by the Extell Development Company could ultimately strengthen developer Bruce Ratner's proposal.

WEINER: I think many people are a little bit concerned that this hasn't been the kind of thing - we've only seen one vision and a vision that I support. now I think we'll have a little sense of contrast. I don't know what the MTA will do but I think the more competition the better.

REPORTER: Ratner is proposing to build 17 residential and commercial towers surrounding a new arena for the Nets. Supporters say his plan offers more affordable housing than the rival bid from the Extell Development Corporation.

But supporters of the Extell plan say it's less intrusive and won't displace any residents.
