Silver Endorses Ferrer for Mayor

Wednesday, August 10, 2005

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver says Fernando Ferrer is the Mayoral candidate who can best unite New York's many communities.

REPORTER: The powerful Democrat says he is endorsing Ferrer because he understands the needs of the city's teachers and students. The two do not agree on everything though. Silver said he opposes Ferrer's plan to bring back a tax on stock transfers in order to fund public schools.

SILVER: While I agree with him we need the resources for education we have to find it some place else. We can't jeopardize the business of downtown with the reinstitution of the stock transfer tax.

REPORTER: Ferrer said people of good will don't have to agree on everything and he would try to change Silver's mind. But Silver represents Lower Manhattan and it's unlikely he'd support a tax on Wall Street.
