New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, fresh from his keynote speech at the Republican National Convention, said during an appearance on late night TV Tuesday that Clint Eastwood’s empty chair speech “didn’t work.”

Appearing on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” Christie said the bizarre speech in which Eastwood addressed an empty chair as if it were President Barack Obama took a turn for the worse when the actor pretended the president was making off-color suggestions.

“When I knew there was really a problem was when he was explaining to the empty chair that was supposed to be the president that he couldn’t tell Mitt Romney to do that to himself because it’s impossible,” Christie said. “And I went, ‘Ok, now we’re going off the rails a little bit.’”

He added, “It didn’t work.”

Meanwhile, it appears Christie did not get a bump from his keynote speech last week.

A new Quinnipiac poll out this morning shows a majority of New Jersey voters still approve of Governor Chris Christie's job performance.  The survey shows his approval rating holding steady at 53 to 42 percent.

Christie's second-ever late night appearance ended with both the governor and Jimmy Fallon belting out Bruce Springsteen's “Thunder Road.” The governor said including a show he saw on Monday, he's seen 130 Springsteen shows.
