This live broadcast on WNYC's The Jonathan Schwartz Show is part of a larger, 12-hour event, which Symphony Space has held annually for the past 35 years. The centerpiece of the four hours, simulcast as part of Schwartz's regular weekend show, will feature an interview with Sondheim and his two long-time collaborators, director-writer James Lapine and writer John Weidman.
Other highlights include a conversation about Sondheim cast albums with Thomas Z. Shepard, as well as several performances, including selections from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, with Michael Arden, Jonathan Hadary and Sheldon Harnick. The Ying Quartet will perform Children Will Listen and Children and Art, arranged for string quartet by Andrew Lippa. There will also be solo performances by Karen Akers, Kate Baldwin, Liz Callaway, Marsha Perry Starkes and K.T. Sullivan.

About Stephen Sondheim
A native New Yorker, Stephen Sondheim was childhood friends with the son of famed lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. He eventually studied with Hammerstein himself. Sondheim's early work was limited to writing the lyrics accompanying other composer's scores. He soon broke from this and began composing his own scores as well as lyrics. His most noted early works include West Side Story, Gypsy and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. His later works include A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd , Assassins and Sunday In The Park With George for which he won the Pulitzer Prize. His most recent musical, The Frogs, debuted in 2004.

Jonathan Schwartz hosts an eclectic mix of American Popular Standards, classical, rock and roll, jazz and "good talk" on Saturdays and Sundays from Noon–4PM on 93.9 FM. Schwartz is the program director and host of Frank's Place on XM Satellite Radio, as well as an accomplished author, cultural commentator and jazz singer. His recent memoir, All In Good Time, published by Random House, received national appreciation. He's a diehard Red Sox fan (is there any other kind?), which shows a certain dedication and passion against all odds, and he winds down the weekend with his unique view on the cultural life of the city, both as an observer and participant. Tune in every weekend for a very particular take on New York life.
