New Jersey's legislative re-districting appears to have already prompted the retirement of at least one veteran Democratic state lawmaker. Passaic County State Senator John Girgenti will retire at the end of his current term.
The state's new map put Hawthorne, Girgenti's long time home town, in the same district as fellow Democratic State Senator Bob Gordon. Girgenti has served in the state legislature since 1978 when he was first elected to the Assembly. He was the sponsor of New Jersey's Megan's law.
Girgenti's vote against gay marriage last year had already motivated at least one challenger for the upcoming June primary.
