Back in the 60's and 70's, we all just called it thumbing it, whenever we wanted to go somewhere. Like when we wanted to split to the Jersey shore from Philly, mostly everyone thumbed it, because 9 out of 10 times, we would always run in to some other long haired leaping gnomes, just like ourselves.Of course if the person driving looked wierd to us, we would turn it down. Imagine now, what we would consider wierd back then!! Well
I will leave it to the reader to imagine, as looking back to what was considered the norms then.
