Live on Soundcheck: Foster the People

Thursday, September 29, 2011

The California-based band Foster the People's hit "Pumped Up Kicks" has an irresistible sing-along chorus ... about a kid with a gun.

"It kind of became a single on its own," lead man Mark Foster explained. "Radio started to pick it up before we even signed a record deal."

For the first couple of weeks after the song took off, Foster admited he was terrified: "I've written so many hopeful songs about loving people, and this is the song that is going to put us on the map? But it's a platform for talking about these things."

Foster the People played an unplugged version of "Pumped Up Kicks" live on Soundcheck.

I am 53 years old - surely not the target audience for these kids. But this is the only song I have ever "downloaded". I can't get it out of my head. Amazing.
