Steve Earle live on Soundcheck (Amy Pearl/WNYC)

If you're looking for the real deal, look no further. Steve Earle's gravely voice, which is equal parts joyful and desolate, infuses his songs with authenticity.

But he's not just a singer, Earle just wrote a novel, his first. The singer-songwriter (and actor and author) treats Soundcheck listeners to "This City," which was written for the HBO series "Treme" and also appears on his new album, I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive.
