The World Cup...of Fencing?
Friday, June 18, 2010
Nzingha Prescod's been fencing since she was nine years old, and she knows how to foil an opponent.
At 17, the recent Stuyvesant High School graduate has already vied for medals in China, Slovakia, Hungary and El Salvador. One place she's never competed? Her hometown of Brooklyn, New York.
That will change this weekend, when Nzingha competes at the Fencing World Cup, held at the Brooklyn Marriott, Friday June 18 through Sunday, June 20.
She's one of the 367 fencers from over 20 countries who will be in attendance.
"I've been doing this for so long, but I still get nervous," Nzingha said at a recent practice at the New York Fencers Club. "It's the first time lots of my friends will see me compete."
Nzinga and her fellow club mate Nicole Ross are in training to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.
All six medal winners from New York City who competed in the last Olympics were fencers.
