(April 4, 2005, New York, NY)—WNYC, New York Public Radio® today announced its launch of "Podcasting @ WNYC," a special web feature dedicated to helping listeners navigate the landscape of this rapidly growing technology.
"Podcasting @ WNYC" will provide visitors with quick access to the podcasts the station offers, as well as a simple "how-to" guide that de-mystifies the process. WNYC currently offers the national program NPR's On the Media®, and two signature local programs, The Brian Lehrer Show and The Leonard Lopate Show, as podcasts.
In addition, the site will provide links to a select set of podcasts from other organizations that complement WNYC's offerings. With options from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), KCRW, among others, visitors will be introduced to programming covering a range of topics—from entertainment to technology to Williamsburg, Brooklyn culture—that would likely interest the typically curious WNYC listener.
"Podcasting @ WNYC" can be found at www.wnyc.org/podcasting, and will include:
From WNYC:
NPR's On the Media—Hosts Brooke Gladstone & Bob Garfield engage in robust discussion about the inner workings of the media, from journalism to entertainment to technology; from censorship issues to how popular culture, politics, and money influence the media and society at large.
The Brian Lehrer Show—It's your neighborhood, your city, your country, your world, and now your website. Brian Lehrer delves into the issues and links them to real life. Enlighten yourself as host Brian Lehrer puts you directly in touch with news makers and gives them a chance to exchange opinions and ideas with call-in listeners. A seasoned moderator, Lehrer directs a "sane alternative" in talk radio.
The Leonard Lopate Show—Host Leonard Lopate lets you in on the best conversations with writers, actors, ex-presidents, dancers, scientists, comedians, historians, grammarians, curators, filmmakers, and do-it-yourself experts. John Updike, Doris Lessing, Bill Bradley, Mark Morris, and Francis Ford Coppola have all been return guests.
From KCRW:
The Treatment—Elvis Mitchell and his guests dive head first into the full range of our contemporary culture. Always unpredictable and engaging.
The Business—Variety's Claude Brodesser looks deep inside the business of entertainment with Hollywood's top deal-makers, filmmakers, moguls, artists and agents. They couldn't turn this stuff into a reality series.
From CBC:
Nerd: CBC Radio's Technology Column
Each week, the CBC's technology columnist Tod Maffin introduces us to new technology, from consumer electronics to the latest Internet trends.
From BBC:
In Our Time—Melvyn Bragg and his guests travel the entire length and breadth of the ideas and events that have shaped our world. It's a dive into the deep end of the biggest of the Big Ideas.
The Little Gray Book Lectures
The Little Gray Book Lectures are a series of readings, songs, demonstrations, discussions, and are much more fun than all of the above. Brainy, irreverent, always rewarding and a Williamsburg, Brooklyn institution since 2001.
The Public Radio Exchange
PRX is a huge repository of audio where public radio producers and programmers meet to share audio. This is independent radio at its best!
"At the same time the number and variety of media options is exploding, we're all feeling the acute pinch of time poverty," said Mikel Ellcessor, WNYC Director of Program Operations. "Podcasting is a way for us to get the shows we love - when we want them. Finding the good stuff shouldn't be another time-consuming task. 'Podcasting @ WNYC' is our effort to help listeners learn the technology quickly, sift through the enormous amount of programming out there and get to some of the best stuff fast."
WNYC began podcasting in January 2005, when it launched the podcast of On the Media, the first NPR program to be made available in this format. Since that time, the station has experienced double-digit growth in its online visitorship.
